Veterans Day was known as Armistice Day before 1954. Armistice Day was originally established to commemorate the end of World War One. The “war to end all wars” concluded, officially, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918.
People have heard of “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” and want to learn more. So they go to the internet and do a search. Guess where a lot of them are winding up. I’m probably not what they expected.

World War 1 was not fought to make the world safe for Democracy. It was fought over Imperialist ambition and the United States only entered the war to ensure the preservation of two democracies (France and England).
The wars you listed afterwards were fought to preserve Democracy also and not to make the world safe for ever more, yada yada yada. World War 2 once again preserved democracies in the world from Fascist and Imperialist aggressors. Korea was fought to a standstill and wow look South Korea still exists as a democracy while North Korea is not. Vietnam was a loss and wow look it is not a democracy.
It is a pretty petty argument to say War has a poor track record in defending Democracy given recent 20th century history. Try to imagine a world in which a Fascist Germany or Imperialist Japan went unopposed. Both nations believed in the inferiority of other ethnicities and felt no compunction with regard to wholesale slaughter. I guess going to war with them was pretty stupid in your opinion.
