It's the Bracelets, Stupid

As if to demonstrate how short a shelf life pop culture has, or how slow I am, events have already overtaken my Magnetic Ribbons post from yesterday. Apparently, bracelets are the new magnetic ribbons (which in turn were the new lapel ribbons - which are so 90's by now). I was vaguely aware of this trend but failed to comprehend its magnitude. Rich Roeper lays it out in his column today in the Chicago Sun Times. But I'm not getting too complacent:

Actually there is an end in sight. Someday in the not-too-distant future,
the Society of People Who Decide These Things will secretly declare an end to
the rubber bracelet trend. They'll quietly put their "LiveStrong" bracelets in a
drawer and replace them with . . . something else.

The rest of us, we'll catch on eventually. And one by one, we'll also
retire our wristbands.

Because the only thing we care about more than supporting a good cause
is to support our own coolness. Nobody wants to be the last person in the room
to know when the trend is over.

I Love the 00's! Don't wait to get nostalgic.
