Talk Like This Pisses me Off

This guy is the Speaker of the House? A national "leader"?
WASHINGTON (AP) -- It makes no sense to spend billions of dollars to rebuild a city that's seven feet under sea level, House Speaker Dennis Hastert said of federal assistance for hurricane-devastated New Orleans.

"It looks like a lot of that place could be bulldozed," the Illinois Republican said in an interview Wednesday with the Daily Herald of Arlington Heights, Illinois.
Fuck you, Hastert. How much do we spend a day "rebuilding" Iraq, asswipe? Maybe if New Orleans was more like Arlington Heights you would reconsider your statement, putz.

I just can't say it enough, fuck you Hastert.

And as much as it pains me, fuck you too Eric Zorn.

As I posted above, you may not like Hastert and that is fine but it is common sense. We moved towns off the floodplains after the '93 flood. Maybe his choice of words were bad but to be honest New Orleans is in a really bad location.

Why is everyone up in arms now when it was just 'common sense' to displace people in 1993.

Hastert may have been factual that it makes no sense to rebuild in a bowl surrounded by a lake, a river and a gulf, but it was his timing that was awful. You just zip your lip when people are dying, not be abrasive and uncaring.

New Orleans is one of the most historic cities in the country and should be rebuilt but, as Jerome Prophet states, by rebuilding the natural barriers AND by filling in the bowl and using house movers to relocate the cathedral and the other historical buildings. Jack them up, move to higher ground, bulldoze what can't be saved and then fill in the bowl AND provide 30+ foot levees. Then rebuild the Vieux Carre and reinstall the buildings.

The cemetaries would have to be buried - they were interesting but dangerous since pickpockets and other lawbreakers had taken a liking to them. Let those souls rest in peace and not remain a tourist attraction.
While I'm not much of a drinker, I loved the garden district, the Vieux Carre and will mourn the loss of the Aquarium. It's glass tunnel with sharks and other sea creatures swimming all around you was awesome!
