This story doesn’t answer the biggest question I have: who was Melman (Calvert DeForest) before Lettermen? He had a long life before David Letterman made him famous. So what was it about?

Damn, you know ... I read this post of yours and thought, "Well, hell ... how hard could it be to find out about Calvert DeForest's life?"
How much more wrong could I be? There's nothing anywhere ... other than the fact that he was born
July 23 1921, in Brooklyn, New York. That's it. For the first time in ages I'm speechless ... what did he do for the first fifty years of his life?
