Vast Wasteland

I give up. I can’t stand to read the comments following the online SJ-R stories anymore. I can’t believe so many stupid (really stoooopid) and bigoted people live in our community. But the thing I hate the most is even in the comments to light-hearted puff pieces, you get such negativity and anger. It really must be terrible having such tortured minds. I’d really hate to see the comments that don’t get past the moderator.

Sometimes I don't even read the comments. Other times, I only read the comments. And, oftentimes I find myself wincing with hurt and fear that there are people out there like that.

I read a lot of blogs and news sites. And I don't think any of them reach the consistently low levels the SJR commenters manage. But, I think it serves a purpose. If, for nothing else, to point out that as a society (or, a town), we still have a long way to go before we're really out of the dark ages.

So, to you Dave, I say, don't quit. The Springfield online and real life community would be better served where such idiocy and hate and bigotry are confronted and exposed. Not that I think you should take them on single-handedly. But, you do have a way with cutting through the crap.

It can get ugly but once in a while I see a story with some very interesting comments that I think serve a good purpose. I think it relates back to the Ann Coulter issue. When you have leaders of an ideological movement who rely on negativity, anger, and nasty personal attacks, you can be sure that their listeners/readers/followers are going to have the same attitude. Its an infectious attitude that spreads too easily.

I think the problem is not the blogs, they are just a reflection of the growing polarization in this country. We need something to pull us together right now. I am not sure what that is, but it seems we dont have any national pride anymore.

I am hoping, and I may be wrong, that Obama might have the potential, like Ronald Reagan did, to unite us.

Now before people start saying that Reagan and Obama stood for different things, I will admit that that is true. But, there were many "Reagan Democrats" and I think there could be many "Obama Republicans"

I am willing to sign up and become a charter member of the Obama Republican team!
