They Call It SOUTHERN Illinois

From the pages of today's Southern Illinoisian:

Benton police got a 911 call from Mary A. Caniglia, 59, reporting a disturbance at the South Main Street residence she shares with Lawrence E. Selcke, 65, just after 7 p.m. When officers from Benton and West City police departments responded to the call, they found Caniglia, wet from head to toe, manning an outdoor grill.

Caniglia told officers she and Selcke got into a heated argument as Selcke was watering plants, resulting in Selcke, her longtime roommate, turning the hose on her and spraying her in the face.

Officers located Selcke, also soaking wet, inside the residence. He admitted spraying Caniglia "to shut her up." He said she retaliated by picking up the garden hose and spraying him, an act which Caniglia readily admitted performing.

Police tried to separate the couple for the night, but neither would leave the residence. Caniglia also insisted to officers that Selcke be arrested for spraying her, an act she called degrading and insulting.

Now here's the punchline...

Both were arrested, accused of domestic battery and taken to Franklin County Jail, proof of the police department's new "If you spray, you pay" zero tolerance policy.

Ha, ha, police comedy kills!

Oh, and check out the mug shots

"Zero tolerence" seems to equal "zero judgement", have you noticed that?
