The Books that Eat Kids’ Brains

Have the “Christian” book burners finally given up on Harry Potter? A quick Google search of “Harry Potter evil” unearths all kinds of links to paranoid screeds about the awful influence Harry Potter is having on our kids, but most seem to be years old. (Many aren’t dated, so it’s hard to tell for sure). It seems to me the whole Potter-is-the-devil meme peaked about seven years ago. My cursory and unscientific Google survey seems confirm that. So have even hardboiled, co-called “Christians” come over to the dark side? Or have they given up against the wave of societal acceptance and lack of evidence of any harm? Or is everyone (the media in particular) just ignoring them like they should have seven years ago?

By the way, I have not read one word or seen one minte of anything Harry Potter. Ever. In case Potter is the devil, you'll need at least one clear-thinking person to document the final clash between the Potter-ized living dead and the righteous defenders of the faith.

Hermione: The Modern Betty Page?

I think this week's Ill Times has a letter about the evilness of HP, though I didn't pay it enough attention to know whether it was earnest or mocking.

Dave,

FYI: The Harry Potter series is in "Book" format, and isn't published in two to three paragraph snippets similar to what most blog post are written in.

JP,

I see, so there is some sort of demonic influence.

My point is that most people who have a problem with the series haven't actually read it.

Of course one man's demon is another man's angel.

Enjoy your three day weekend, or are you blogging from you iPhone again?

This is rediculous. I grew up reading fairy tales. Are they considered satanic also? Harry Potter is pure fantasy and it gets kids to read. My daughter came home last night about 1 in the morning after dressing up and waiting in line at Barnes and Noble to buy the book. The way I look at it is she is reading. That cannot be bad!
