BB Ping Bust

.
The SJ-R says arrests have been made in the case of the weekend BB gun shooting spree. One 17 year-old and four other “juveniles” were arrested.

In cases like this, I like a combination of reasonable punishment (not the death penalty and not life you wingnuts) AND restitution of some sort. Oh, an apology (or 190 of them) would be nice too.

Psssst.

Shouldn't we wait until after the trial before we discuss any penalties?

Presumption of innocence, that whole thing?

JP,

I am versed in libel law enough to know not to convict someone before a trail and that’s why I said “in cases like this”. To clarify, I make no assumption of guilt here only that when or if someone is convicted, I have ideas on the what the result of that should be.

This is a complicated case. Trial date has been set for February 2008. These people need the same time to defend themselves as Tony Rezko.

These kids are guilty. They were turned in by a friend and the PD found the guns and bbs.

I have mixed feelings for their parents. 1. They will probably have to pay close to 200k to fix all of the damage that was done. 2. What the heck were they doing allowing their kids to be out at 2am?

Oh come on now - not one mention of these suspected / accused vandals getting basically a RICO statute thrown at them? I understand punishment needs to come down and they must be held accountable if proven guilty. But dropping a statute that sounds a lot like RICO on them is a bit of overkill if you ask me.
