Misquoting Lincoln

.
What’s in the GOP water cooler today? Now we have a congressman, on the House floor, attributing this quote to Lincoln.
Congressmen who willfully take action during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs, and should be arrested, exiled or hanged.
Problem is, it’s common knowledge in the reality-based universe that Abe said no such thing. Idiot. This is another example of why the national GOP is in so much trouble. They'll believe anything as long as it suits their agenda.

I guess they don't recall Abe's "Spotty Lincoln" speech in which he made as a freshman congressman pertaining to the invasion of Mexico by U.S. troops.

His speech was critical of the land grab of what are now several western states, but at the time was part of Mexico.

Then as now the President of the U.S. used lies to justify the military action which he had secretly planned for over a year. The majority of U.S. citizens were in support of the land grab, and it took courage for Lincoln, who was nobody at the time, to confront the powers that be.

The GOP might want to quote Hitler instead of Lincoln as it seems better suited to their attempt to justify the submission of a legislative body to the will of an all powerful executive.

And yes, for all readers of this comment I am fully aware of some of the strong arm, and unconstitutional actions which Lincoln took during the Civil War. It was after all a fight for the very continuation of this form of government, and there is no real similarity to the war of choice we have waged upon Iraq.
